âSo why donât you go to the police? You said you have information the police donât have that would help the investigation.â
âBecause the police have nothing to offer me in exchange.â
ALLY and STEVE
Nothing too extraordinary happens the rest of the day. Erica leaves town to meet with Ryanâs family in order to start preparations for the funeral service and I learn that Robbie went with her.
Riley managed to secure an interview with Demi, who just keeps repeating how in love she and Ryan were, and how devastated she is by this tragedy. I admire her nerve, but I also do believe that some part of her truly loved him.
âThen again, sheâs also a good actress, she could easily be pretending,â Emma reminds me later, when we meet for coffee at Isola Bella. âIâm not saying she didnât love him, but remember, she negotiated a fake relationship with him for publicity. Is that something you would do if you really cared about someone?â
âMaybe that was just her way of keeping him around,â Isabella suggests. âShe was in love, and couldnât stand the idea of losing him forever.â
âYou know Isa, that sounds pretty plausible to me.â
Right then, I get a text from Steve Wyatt. Iâve been waiting for a call from him for hours; I thought he had changed his mind.
âHeâll be here in ten minutes,â I tell the girls.
While Iâm waiting, I call Melinda and ask her to call me back. Iâm curious to hear what she has to say about Demi.
Steve Wyatt strolls in confidently and winks at me as he sits down. âHard to miss you with a pretty face like that.â
âI hope you donât think flattery is a means to win me over.â
âWhy not? Iâve been known to charm a pretty girl or two in my time.â
I donât think heâs funny, but I canât help smiling. Heâs just like some idiot frat boy who knows heâs got a winning smile and uses it on everybody. From the way he acts and dresses youâd think he was 25, but I know in reality heâs pushing 35.
âAlly Rhodes! Can I call you Ally? Iâve been reading your blog, and you have a solid reputation. I hope you and I can help each other out.â
âIâm not sure I want to help you,â I retort.
He bursts out laughing. âAnother diehard Ryan Steele fan?â
âI donât see anything wrong with that. The fact is, I donât like people who spread lies about other people, and from what Iâve been told, thatâs exactly what you planned on doing.â
âWho said I was planning to spread lies? Erica, Mila?â I remain silent and he continues. âIâll put my cards on the table if you give me the details about the crime scene. See, despite what you think, I donât just go around making things up. I choose my sources carefully.â
âI didnât see anything other than what the newspapers mentioned.â
âI doubt the newspapers wrote about each personâs reaction to the discovery of the body.â
âIsnât it a bit macabre
